Chelsea have equaled their record of seven successive away wins in all competitions, their joint-longest winning run on the road in their history, alongside seven-match streaks in April 1989 and November 2019.
Chelsea got back to winning ways in fine fashion, putting six past Southampton on the south coast with goals from Marcos Alonso, Timo Werner, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.
Inspired by Mason Mount Chelsea thrashed Southampton, who had lost five of their previous six matches, to avenge two defeats in five days. Chelsea won their eighth successive away game in all competitions, tying for the joint-longest winning streak in club history.
Before his team took the lead in the eighth minute, Timo Werner had already hit the crossbar twice. Mason Mount superbly deflected a Ruben Loftus-Cheek cross down to Marcos Alonso, who blasted it past Fraser Forster to set off an avalanche of misery for the hosts.
Mount scored just seven minutes after setting up the opening goal, blasting a low shot past Forster from the edge of the area.
The visitors' dismal start quickly turned disastrous, as they gifted Chelsea two more goals. Werner was given a run in on goal after James Ward-misplaced Prowse's header, and the German rounded Forster to double his Premier League tally.
Kai Havertz is a Chelsea player who isn't short of goals, and he was on hand to punch in a rebound from another Werner attempt that hit the woodwork after some amusing defending from Mohammed Salisu.
Southampton fans who returned to their seats after the break were left with an immediate sense of sorrow, as Werner scored his second goal of the game just four minutes into the second half, giving him more goals against Southampton than against the rest of the Premier League combined. Mount pounced five minutes later to add a sixth goal and put the agony on the 'Saints.'
Chelsea were able to rest several of their key players ahead of their trip to Madrid on Tuesday, while Southampton were satisfied to escape another notorious 9-0 defeat.
